Free Alba
is an exhibition that is about Eduardo Kac's GFP Bunny. "Alba"
the GFP BUNNY, is a bunny rabbit that has been created via the
hybridisation of the GFP Gene (green fluorescent protein) extracted
from Jellyfish with the DNA of a Rabbit. Eduardo Kac created
Alba with the intention that she becomes a member of his family
and lives with him in Chicago. Alba was to be exhibited in the
distinguished AVIGNONumerique exhibition in France (where Eduardo
had her created), unfortunately Alba has been confined to live
her life in a laboratory in France. Eduardo has not been able
to have her released or gain access to her. Artists participating
in this Free Alba exhibition have been asked to consider this
scenario and make works in response to the rhetoric, discourse
and debate associated with Alba. Since Duchamp introduced the
"Readymade" into the visual arts, the boundaries of
this practice have been widened significantly; A readymade urinal
is one thing, what does it mean to the practice of contemporary
art when an artist may introduce a genetically modified readymade
bunny that glows in the dark? Should Eduardo be given permission
to take his bunny home? These are just some examples of the
discourse, which Alba the GFP Bunny has generated. The Free
Alba exhibition hopes to proliferate the dialogue associated
with the GFP Bunny and to bring awareness to Eduardo Kac's fight
to get Alba Home.
