Science hops into art

A GLOW-in-the-dark rabbit named Alba inspired the latest exhibition at the Pine Rivers Regional Art Gallery.

Marnie Dean, the show's curator and one of the eight artists who have contributed works, said Alba was created by new media arts pioneer Eduardo Kac by combining the GFP gene from a jellyfish, with rabbit DNA.

The resulting bunny emitted a green fluorescence when exposed to ultra-violet light, Ms Dean said.

The exhibition was their response to the rhetoric, discourse and debate associated with Alba which Kac wanted to have live with his family.

Alba changed the definition of art and blurred the relationship between art and science, she said.

Works on show include posters, light boxes, installations, projected images and billboards.

"I'm happy it's introducing contemporary art to the shire," she said.

The exhibition runs until August 3. The PRRAG is at 199 Gympie Rd, Strathpine, (off Mecklem St). It is open 11am-4pm on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays.
